Doha, – Under auspices of HE Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the 5th Qatar International Agricultural Exhibition (Agriteq 2017) is set to open tomorrow Wednesday.

The four-day event is organized by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, in cooperation with the International Exhibitions Company at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center. More than 100 local and global leading agriculture companies are expected to participate this year. They are set to exchange expertise and discuss the latest developments, challenges and opportunities facing the agricultural sector.

Director of the Department of Agricultural Affairs at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment Yousef Khalid Al Khulaifi said that the event this year will focus on local producers and Qatari farmers, to shed light on the progress Qatari local production has made in the agricultural field. Al Khulaifi was speaking at a press conference ahead of the exhibition tomorrow and said the event will also be a platform for investors to exchange their expertise with local producers. He added that the exhibition was developing more each year and is making an important contribution to agriculture in the country. The participation of more than a 100 different entities concerned with meat and poultry production as well as other industries in the sector reflected that.

For his part, Director of Public Parks at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment Mohammed Ali Al Khouri said that this year’s event will host a number of seminars, workshops, and panel discussions to enable exchange of experiences and knowledge sharing for the local sector’s further improvement. The exhibition will also be a suitable opportunity to discuss food security and sustainability challenges.

Director of public relations and communications at the Ministry Khalaf Ajlan Al Enzi said that the event will also focus on raising awareness of children on the importance of agriculture. He highlighted the presence of many activities that aims at engaging children with agriculture and the importance of food security.

Agritech is part of Qatar’s efforts to develop the agricultural sector and help it contribute more than the 4 percent of GDP it currently achieves. These efforts complement the economic diversification efforts paramount to realizing Qatar National Vision 2030. It is an opportunity for decision makers to meet with producers and investors to discuss challenges and opportunities that can push the sector forward towards more sustainable growth. (QNA)
