Abdullah bin Zayed receives Afghan, Djibouti foreign ministers

ABU DHABI, 31st July, 2013 (WAM)– H. H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Foreign Minister, today received in his office at the Ministry the Afghan Foreign Minister, Dr Zalmai Rasoul.

During the meeting, Sheikh Abdullah and Rasoul exchanged views on bilateral relations and the latest developments in the region, especially in Afghanistan.

The UAE foreign minister stressed the depth of the country’s relations with Afghanistan and its commitment to safeguard the security and stability of Afghanistan. He said the UAE will continue to provide assistance to the Afghan government at the bilateral level and through cooperation with international partners.

Sheikh Abdullah noted the wish of both countries to strengthen relations in a way that reflects the aspirations of the leadership in both countries and also the interests of the two peoples.

For his part, the Afghan foreign minister commended the role of the UAE, led by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in supporting the Afghan government and people as well as the UAE’s contributions to regional and international efforts to provide all forms of development assistance to Afghanistan. He noted that the UAE’s role in providing humanitarian assistance and development aid is greatly appreciated by the Afghan officials and people.

Sheikh Abdullah and Zalmai signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on labour, an agreement in security cooperation between the governments of the United Arab Emirates and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and an agreement on the transfer of people given prison sentences.

The UAE foreign minister also received Djibouti’s minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation, Mohmoud Ali Yusuf.

During the meeting, the two ministers discussed the existing ties of cooperation between the UAE and Djibouti. They also exchanged views on the latest regional and international issues as well as political issues of mutual interest.

Sheikh Abdullah and the Djibouti minister signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the establishment of a joint committee for cooperation between the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Djibouti.

The MoU has the objective of supporting the existing ties between the two countries and their peoples, and reflects the desire of both parties to strengthen bilateral relations in all fields, so as to achieve common goals.

The two ministers also signed an agreement on air services between and beyond their respective countries.
