5 Indian Soldiers Rescued, 21 People Dead in Kashmir Snowfall

Srinagar, Kashmir, Five soldiers trapped under snow in the Machil area of India-administered Kashmir have been rescued, an army spokesman said Saturday, amid fresh avalanche warnings for the region.
Heavy snowfall since Tuesday in the upper reaches of the Himalayan region has led to avalanches and house collapses in which 21 people – including 15 soldiers – have died.
“The snow track leading to an army post caved in at Machil this morning, resulting in five soldiers getting trapped under the snow,” army spokesman Rajesh Kalia said.
“They were rescued in a day-long operation,” he added.
