Washington, – A new pubic opinion poll says that 31% of Americans would like to see the end of Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza and the establishment of a single state with full rights for Palestinian citizens.

And 30% of Americans say the U.S. should impose economic sanctions on Israel to stop illegal settlements in the West Bank.

The poll, conducted last month by the University of Maryland, showed that 37% wanted a two-state solution, and 15% said they preferred to keep the situation the way that it is.

A single state with Palestinian rights would likely mean the end of a Jewish-dominated government. Yet 33% of Democrats, 32% of Independents and 27% of Republicans said that this is what they want.

In regard to continuing Israeli colonization of the West Bank in the form of illegal settlements, a significant number of those polled–30%–said the United States should impose economic sanctions on Israel, either unilaterally or through the United Nations. This figure included 42% of Democrats who were asked.

Twenty-eight percent of respondents said the United States criticism of Israeli settlements should be limited to words only, with no action taken. Another 26% said the U.S. should do nothing at all about it, while 11% called for unspecified action by the U.S., stronger even than sanctions.

Asked about the Trump administration’s stance on the issue, 54% of those polled said the U.S. should be completely neutral, while 37% said it should favor Israel, while only 11% said Washington should back the Palestinians over the Israelis.

Significantly, 15% of Democrats said the U.S. should favor Israel, while 11% said it should back the Palestinians, a difference of only 4%. Seventy-two percent of Democrats want the Trump administration to favor neither side.

In terms of how important the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is to Americans, only 4% said it was the most important issue facing the U.S. Forty-two percent said it was among the top five issues, and 30% said it was not among the five issues of greatest importance. (QNA)
