18 People Dead after Overcrowded Boat Capsizes in India

New Delhi, At least 18 people drowned Saturday when a packed boat carrying at least 40 people capsized in the Ganga river near the eastern Indian town of Patna, police said.
The boat was carrying people back along the river from the site of a kite-flying festival organized by the local government.
“Eighteen bodies have been found, many have been rescued but some are still missing,” an official at the Patna police control room said.
The boat was overcrowded and capsized soon after leaving Ganga Ghat, the boat station near the festival site.
The three-day kite flying event is held to mark the local festival of Makar Sankranti, which heralds the arrival of spring.
