15,000 asylum seekers in 2016 so far in Austria

VIENNA, March 24 (KUNA) — Austria is expected to hit the half way mark on the number asylum seekers it would accept, Federal Ministry of the Interior said Tuesday.
In January around 6,000 people applied for asylum in Austria, and around 5,000 followed in February.
In March 4,000 people have so far applied for refugee status, bringing the present total for 2016 to 15,000 applications.
The Austrian government said that it only wanted to take in 37,500 refugees in 2016. When asked about the fact that almost half of the quota was already fulfilled, the interior ministry did not confirm and referred to still outstanding legal issues surrounding the upper limit. (end) amq.nfm
