Worker killed in Istanbul subway construction

A worker died early on Friday in an accident during the construction of an Istanbul subway line, whose groundbreaking ceremony was officiated by the Istanbul mayor a day before. The accident took place at the MecidiyekandOy station of the line planned to be completed between the neighborhoods of MecidiyekandOy and Kabatai. Adil Kolukisaoilu, a 32-year-old worker, was reportedly sitting on the side of a construction vehicle when he lost his balance and fell off the vehicle. The operator using the vehicle did not notice Kolukisaoilu and accidentally caused his death. The worker was pulled out from under the vehicle by his coworkers, who called an ambulance. Paramedics arrived at the construction site but were too late to save Kolukisaoilu. The workerand’s body was taken to a morgue by a municipal funeral service car. The police have launched an investigation into the incident. Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Kadir Topbai had officiated on Thursday the groundbreaking ceremony of the subway line. Turkey has a bad record of worker deaths. Turkey ranks first among European countries and third in the world in terms of the annual number of accidents in the workplace. Marking a tragic year in the countryand’s history for workplace safety records, 2014 saw 1,886 workers die in work-related accidents.
