Worker dies in accident at 3rd bridge construction site

Electrician Serhat OzOndel died after a construction vehicle at the site of Istanbul’s third bridge over the Bosporus fell on top of him early Friday morning, according to a report by the Karii online news portal.

Another worker, Serhan Ozturk, was seriously injured in the accident and had one of his legs severed after being crushed by the vehicle, according to the report.

OzOndel was reportedly married and the father of four. Zafer Guzen, secretary of the Istanbul branch of the Turkish Union of Engineers and Architects’ Chambers (TMMOB), posted photos on his Twitter account on Friday of the fallen construction vehicle lying on its side.

Three workers died last year following the collapse of scaffolding on a viaduct of the bridge. The controversial bridge has been fiercely opposed by environmentalists and activists, who argue that it will contribute to the city’s traffic problem and harm the environment.
