Turkey’s ’domestically produced’ plane of German origin

An in-progress aircraft that the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) has repeatedly billed as domestically produced in fact consists of German parts that were previously phased out of production, according to a report in the Meydan daily on Thursday.
Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoilu unveiled plans for a plane to be built by 2019 at a launch ceremony on Thursday, saying the aircraft will be designed and built entirely by Turkish engineers based on the German aircraft maker Dornierand’s 328 model.
However, AK Party election posters leading up to the 2011 general election as well as the upcoming June 7 general election boast of a and”domestically producedand” plane, a potentially misleading claim given that the parts are not of Turkish origin. The propeller and the jet engine were produced by Dornier in the 1990s and early 2000s but were phased out of production by the company due to lack of demand. These components will be and”modernizedand” by the American Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC), owned by Fatih and Eren andOzmen, a Turkish couple residing in the United States. The Defense Ministry will be funding the production, and SNC is expected to purchase production rights from the Turkish government and produce a run of 50 airplanes at a cost of $1.5 billion.
While speaking at the ceremony Davutoilu added that Turkey would no longer purchase weaponry, vehicles and technology from other countries. Earlier this year, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized industrialists for their failure to produce a Turkish-made automobile. and”It is 2015 and we are still going from door to door regarding the local automobile. For years, this country has been spending funds that it accumulated under difficult conditions on planes and tanks from abroad. Those who are timid when it comes to production are quite brave when it comes to importing. This is a problem, and” said Erdogan.
