Turkey looks to Euro 2016 with hope after Almaty win

The Turkish national football does not play its next Euro 2016 qualifying match until Sept. 6, when Fatih Terimand’s men host the Netherlands in their seventh group game.
The Turks are currently placed fourth in the six-team standings, despite their hard-fought 1-0 victory over basement-dweller Kazakhstan in Almaty on Friday.
Third-placed Netherlands defeated Latvia 2-0 away on the same day, meaning Turkey with eight points from six games trails the Dutchmen by two points, second-placed Czech Republic by five and leader Iceland, which overcame the Czechs 2-1 in Reykjavik on Friday, by seven.
This means finishing first or second and earning an automatic berth in Euro 2016 is now nothing but a distant dream for Turkey. But the Turks believe they can eventually leapfrog the Dutch into third place and at least qualify for the playoffs.
Fatih Terimand’s men therefore are looking to the future with hope and enthusiasm with four games to go — and they have two reasons to do so.
Firstly, the performance of the Turkish team has improved considerably and the slim win over Kazakhstan did not reflect its level of play. The luck factor definitely exists in football and Turkey found the target hard to locate, just managing to win by the slightest margin in a match where it could have scored a hatful of goals.
Top scorer Burak Yilmaz, missed the target in the 53rd minute and hit the woodwork 20 minutes later. But it was also Burak who set up captain Arda Turan to score what proved to be the winner in the 83rd minute.
Terim looked a very relieved man after the match. and”It is not easy to stand on the edge of the precipice, and” he said. and”Arda is a world-class player. He came to the rescue when the going got tough and finished the job. The maximum points were important for us and thatand’s the reason [the value of] these three points cannot be underestimated, and” he noted.
Secondly, the Turks will be playing three of the remaining four matches at home, which is yet another reason for hope. Goalscorer and Atletico playmaker Arda reflected these sentiments.
and”My scoring was not very important. What was important was that we succeeded in carrying our hopes to September. We have the ability to complete the unfinished job ourselves and this time around I believe in this team. We are now playing as a team and will fight until the very end. And with the help of the Konya fans we shall prevail, and” he said.
