Trustee insults, dismisses employees after taking over Bugun daily

Hasan andOlandcer, one of the trustees appointed on Monday to take over the management of the ipek Media Group following a controversial court decision, insulted several employees of the Bugandun daily during a meeting on Thursday, and unlawfully dismissed those employees who refused to act in line with their orders.
A number of employees from the Bugandun daily, including Editor-in-Chief Erhan Baiyurt, Publishing Coordinator Mehmet Yilmaz and Managing Editor GandungandOr Ergun, were fired on Thursday in a wave of dismissals decided by the newly appointed trustees.

The trustees, who forcibly took over the management of the Bugandun daily, as well as Bugandun TV and Kanaltandurk, following an abusive police intervention in which many journalists and protesters were subjected to excessive police force early on Wednesday, announced during a meeting on Thursday morning that the board of the appointed trustees had decided to fire Baiyurt and Yilmaz from the daily.
andOlandcer, who presided over the meeting, insulted the employees and criticized the Thursday edition of the newspaper.
The trustees stopped Thursdayand’s edition of the two dailies — Bugandun and Millet — from going to print on Wednesday. The editors had earlier shared the pages they had prepared for publication via social media.
Some readers were surprised to see print versions of the dailies on Thursday after the newspaper editors managed to print about 40,000 copies in printing houses other than their own. Todayand’s Zaman has learned that the editors had asked the Ciner Media Group to print their newspapers but were refused. After printing a certain number of the dailies, the Dogan Media Group also stopped printing for unknown reasons.
Speaking with Todayand’s Zaman, Ergun shared some details of the meeting, saying the behavior displayed by andOlandcer clearly demonstrates the aim of the takeover of the media outlets affiliated with the ipek Media Group was to change the publishing or broadcasting policies of those media outlets immediately.
During the meeting held at about 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, andOlandcer told them a new editor-in-chief would be appointed in Baiyurtand’s place, Ergun said. and”I took to the floor and asked him how we are supposed to do our jobs in an atmosphere where police officers are walking around the corridors of the building. I said there are many police vehicles waiting in front of the building. We are journalists. We should be able to express our opinions in a free and objective atmosphere. I also asked andOlandcer whether we would be able to publish our paper today after reminding him the publication of Thursdayand’s print edition was halted by the trustees yesterday. Then andOlandcer insulted our publication, saying andlsquoYesterdayand’s publication was a disgrace,and” Ergun told Todayand’s Zaman.
and”Our colleagues reacted against andOlandcerand’s insults and told him he cannot insult the views of people in the newspaper. An editor, Bilal iahin, shouted: andlsquoThis newspaper is my honor. You cannot insult it!and’ andOlandcer ordered the police officers waiting in the meeting room to remove iahin from the room and detain him. When he said this, all of us reacted and said if they detain him, they will have to detain all of us in the newspaper as well. We said the police cannot intervene in our newspaperand’s work. Tensions were flaring. andOlandcer asked me if I shared the view of the paper that was prevented from being printed as well. I said I hold the absolute same views as the publication, upon which he told me to leave the newspaper just like my friend iahin was forced to do,and” Ergun recounted.
Responding to iahinand’s remarks, andOlandcer, holding the newspaper, asked: and”Is this your honor? Donand’t be disgraceful! This [Thursday edition] is a disgrace.and”

and”I went to Baiyurtand’s room. andOlandcer was sitting with another trustee. They were also two police officers standing behind them. He [andOlandcer] introduced himself and said they had come to the newspaper to take over its management. He then asked me the number of employees working at the daily. I told him he should be addressing Baiyurt and that he could find out the number of employees from the human resources department. When I said this, he used some insulting remarks such as andlsquoDo you think you are smart? Am I an idiot? Get out!and’ as though he was trying to provoke me. I did not respond and stared at him in protest. He was disturbed and told me to get out again. I continued to be silent in protest.and”
Yilmaz said because he was aware of andOlandcerand’s intentions, he refused to attend the meeting later that morning, adding he believes andOlandcer was trying to provoke the employees so as to fire them.
Reporter Cihan Acar was also fired by andOlandcer on Thursday.
Speaking with the Cihan news agency over his dismissal, Acar said andOandcler threatened the employees during the meeting. Recounting that andOlandcer was holding up the Thursday edition of the paper that was published despite the trusteesand’ prevention, Acar said andOlandcer told them all if they agreed with the publication, they should leave the newspaper right now. and”He [andOlandcer] also said they will not tolerate anyone who opposes them,and” Acar said.
and”During the meeting today, the trustees held up the paper and said, andlsquoThose who hold these opinions cannot work here.and’ These peopleand’s problem is the editorial policy,and” Zaman reporter Ahmet DandOnmez, who watched the meeting via live video streaming application Periscope, commented on Twitter on Thursday.
The Platform for Independent Journalism (P24) has said it will file a criminal complaint with the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutorand’s Office on Nov. 2 against andOlandcer on behalf of dismissed reporters iahin and Acar for misconduct and insulting the journalists.
In addition to the Bugandun daily, the trustees also fired several editors from the Millet daily on Thursday. Millet Editor-in-Chief Deier andOzergin, Managing Editor Cuma Ulus and Economy Editor Ufuk ianli were among those dismissed on Thursday. Speaking to Todayand’s Zaman, andOzergin said he has not yet received any official statement over his dismissal.
Bugandun TV Editor-in-Chief Tarik Toros was sacked from his post at the station on Wednesday by way of a handwritten notice from the new executive board.
Prominent journalist Nazli Ilicak announced on her Twitter account on Thursday that her news program, which used to air on Bugandun TV every Thursday, would no longer be broadcast after the channel was taken over. The program and”andOzgandur ifadeand” (free expression) was presented by Ilicak and journalist Hayko Baidat. Ililcak said on Twitter there were no plan for the news program, which is why she left the headquarters of the group on Thursday afternoon.
The police on Wednesday raided the headquarters of the media outlets after the Ankara 5th Criminal Court of Peace ruled on Monday for the takeover of the administration of Koza ipek Holdingand’s companies, which includes critical media outlets, in a government backed move.
Accompanied by riot police in gas masks, the police officers broke down the gates of the corporate headquarters of the holding, used pepper spray on the lawyers who tried to protest and entered the building by force. Police teams escorting a board of trustees, appointed to take over the management of the group, and entered the television stationsand’ satellite uplink room in the following hours and cut broadcasting.

Mirzabeyoilu was sentenced to life in jail on charges of and”attempting to forcefully change the constitutional orderand” but was released in 2014 after serving 16 years following a retrial.

h2 Pro-govand’t Star columnist threatens FOX TVh2 A day after the Bugandun and Kanaltandurk TV channels were taken over by trustees, pro-government Star columnist Cem Kanduandcanduk publicly threatened the news teams of FOX TV, an independent Turkish channel, over their broadcasts critical of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Speaking during a TV show on the pro-AK Party Kanal 24 on Thursday, Kanduandcanduk told the news team to and”watch themselves.and” He implied the governmentand’s next target might be FOX TV.
The prime time news on FOX TV is currently the most watched show in Turkey and is hosted by Fatih Portakal.
Kanduandcanduk had earlier also threatened a number of other journalists for their opposing stances against Erdogan and the government. He previously issued death threats to journalist Ahmet Hakan in September over his critical comments of Erdogan and the government. Hakan was later attacked by four men near his residence in Istanbul on Oct. 1.
