Winners of AydIn DoIan cartoon competition on display in IstanbulAward-winning works from this yearandrsquos AydIn DoIan International Cartoon Competition went on display Tuesday in an Istanbul gallery, bringing to the city an international selection of often politically themed works for the 31st year in a row.The exhibition will continue until Jan.

10, 2015, at Galeri IIIk in the TeIvikiye neighborhood, the DoIan news agency reported on Wednesday. Displayed in the exhibition are the winners of the 31st competitionandrsquos three major prizes, along with those that won honorable mentions.

An untitled cartoon by Antalya-based Turkish designer-cartoonist KurIat Zaman that depicts a line of coffins arriving through a conveyor belt that seems to link to a restricted military area won the first prize in this yearandrsquos competition, beating works by 813 other artists from 70 countries. Iranian cartoonist Mojtaba Heidarpanah won second prize and Krzysztof Grzondziel from Poland won third prize.

Cartoons by artists from China, the Netherlands and Brazil are also on display in the selection.A total of 2,556 cartoons were submitted to the 2014 competition, whose winners were announced mid-June in the southwestern resort town of Bodrum The annual competition is traditionally not restricted to any one theme.

The winners were chosen by an international jury headed by New York-based cartoonist Liza Donnelly.
