Online campaign launched to save music centerA group of musicians have launched a campaign to renew efforts to open the Halki International Music Research Center on Istanbul’s Heybeliada island, as the project is in danger of being discontinued after restaurateurs working inside the center were asked to vacate the building.Musicians Nedim Hazar Bora, Taner ngur and Murat Meri came together and formed the Friends of Halki Music Center, an online petition and awareness campaign, after they heard the center may not open due to as yet unstated reasons.

A joint effort between Vassiliki Papageorgiou, Nikiforos Metaxas, mer Faruk Berksan and residents of the island, the center was slated to open in the abandoned and partly-collapsed Greek Primary School on Heybeliada following the building’s restoration. The center originally received funding for the building’s restoration from both the government of Greece and the European Union.

Additionally, Turkey supported the project financially during the “Istanbul 2010: European Capital of Culture” project. Greek funding for the project dried up after the economic crisis in Greece.

Later, Istanbul Technical University offered support for the continuation of the project. However, staff from the university were asked to leave the building for reasons that are not clear, leaving the fate of the center uncertain.
