New work by Sarkis to go on display at Venice BiennaleA new work by renowned Turkish-Armenian conceptual artist Sarkis Zabunyan will be on display at next year’s Venice Biennale, the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV) announced in a press release on Tuesday.Sarkis’ as-yet-untitled work will be on view in the Turkish pavilion at Arsenale, one of the two main venues of the Biennale, where Turkey has a permanent venue until 2034.

The presentation will be put together by internationally acclaimed Turkish curator Defne Ayas, who currently heads the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam, said the IKSV, which has been coordinating the Turkish pavilion at the International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, since 2007.Known for his interdisciplinary work, Sarkis studied painting at Istanbul’s prestigious Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University before moving to Paris in the early 1960s, where he still lives and works.

The 75-year-old artist, who opened his first solo exhibition in 1960, has presented his work at numerous high-profile exhibitions and museums throughout his career that spans over half a century, including the Louvre and the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, and at New York’s Guggenheim Museum, among others.The Venice Biennale will mark its 56th anniversary from May 9 to Nov.
