Court to begin hearing Soma case in AprilThe Akhisar High Criminal Court will begin the trial of 45 suspects in connection with a mining disaster which claimed the lives of 301 workers and injured scores of others in Soma nearly a year after the day of the accident.Speaking to the press on Monday, Zeynel BalkIz, the former head of the Manisa Bar Association and the lawyer of the injured workers, spoke about the first hearing of the Soma case, which involves 436 witnesses, 162 injured miners and 487 plaintiffs for the victims.

andldquoThe criminal case of the Soma mining disaster has started at the Akhisar High Criminal Court. As of today, the roadmap of the court has been set,andrdquo BalkIz said.

BalkIz outlined that eight defendants who are currently in custody pending trial will attend the court hearing in person rather than using the IT Voice and Image System (SEGBIS), which enables courts to hear defenses testimonies via a video conferencing systemProsecutors are seeking to proceed with first-degree murder charges against Soma Holding board Chairman Can Gurkan and the other seven senior officials, while prison terms of between 32 months and 20 years are being sought for eight other company employees on charges of homicide through conscious negligence.On May 13, 2014, Turkey was shocked by an explosion and blaze at a coal mine in the western town of Soma that killed 301 miners and left many others injured.

A fire that started in the mine rapidly depleted oxygen in the shaft, causing hundreds of miners to die of carbon monoxide poisoning.
