Ankara hosts Turkey’s first drum and percussion festivalFor three days this week Ankara is hosting a gathering of drum and percussion masters and aficionados in the countryandrsquos first ever festival focused solely on drumming.Hosted in its first year by the Middle East Technical University (ODTu) Jazz Society, the festival is running from Wednesday through Friday, with workshops and competitions as well as jam sessions at ODTuandrsquos Congress and Culture Center, and the lecture hall of the schoolandrsquos architecture department.

Musician Gerek Dorman, one of the festivalandrsquos founders, says they want the event to spread to other Turkish cities in its upcoming editions, according to a press statement released on Tuesday by the eventandrsquos organizers.The D52 Drum and Percussion Festival is named after a textbook written by Dorman, in which he teaches the basics of drumming in 52 weeks.

Drummers and percussionists conducting workshops at the festival include Deniz Gungr, DoIa Titiz, Erhan Karaca, Jarrod Cagwin, Onur Ertem, zgur Can ney and Nedim Ruacan, among others.Among the festivalandrsquos events is the Ankara leg of the international competition Worldandrsquos Fastest Drummer (WFD), whose Turkish finals will be held in Istanbul in May 2015.
