Syrian chemical weapons facilities will be destructed by the end of June

Commenting on Syria’s chemical weapons, UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Angela Kane said the destruction of the production facilities will be completed by the end of June or the first days of July.”

Speaking to reporters today (7 May) after briefing the Security Council members, Kane explained “there are two hangars and one bunker, which are under the control of the government, but the access routes are not always in the hands of the government.”

She also said “what’s not yet moved forward in a major way is the request by the Syrian Arab Republic to have a fact-finding team. They have asked the OPCW for a fact-finding mission to investigate incidents that took place in December.”

The Syrian government claimed that rebels had used chlorine in several incidents in December 2014.

Kane said “everyone is making accusations and I think that we have also received information and communications from the Syrian Government, where they are alleging material has reached rebel hands and there is nothing actual that there’s a known fact.”

She added ” it will be very good that the incidents would be investigated and looked into by the fact finding mission; and therefore I believe it is in the interest of the Syrian government, as well as the international community that these fact finding missions deploy very quickly and therefore bring light into the matter.”
