Serbian president gives Vucic mandate to form gov’t

Baku: After meeting leader of Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) Aleksandar Vucic, Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic said Tuesday he had decided to give Vucic the mandate to form a new government.

“It is a duty of Aleksandar Vucic to choose people that he trusts to be ministers,” Nikolic said after the meeting on Tuesday in the building of the Serbian Presidency.

“We agreed to share the responsibility so the government and the president will work very closely. We will work as a team especially in bringing unpopular decisions,” said Nikolic after the meeting, congratulating Vucic on the results of the March 16 parliamentary elections.

The coalition around Vucic’s SNS won 158 seats in the 250-seated parliament in the parliamentary elections on March 16.

Vucic promised to work on building a “healthy and respectable” country, and announced hard and serious reforms “for the benefit of future generations, and not for the future elections.”

According to Vucic, the new Serbian government will be formed on April 27.
