Seabird Airlines sputters to a halt

Seabird Airlines, Turkeyand’s first and only floatplane operator, has ceased operations following several months of inactivity, according to a report in the Handurriyet daily on Tuesday.
Seabird operated floatplanes from Istanbul to popular seaside vacation destinations such as Alaandcati, Bozcaada, andcanakkale, Gemlik, Ayvalik as well as flights in between those destinations. The companyand’s first flight left the water in just under three years ago in June 2012.
According to sources close to the company, Seabird is experiencing financial difficulties that have resulted in the cancellation of its flights. The problems began following after a major investor severed his ties with the company. The companyand’s fleet is currently sitting idle at its base in Istanbuland’s Golden Horn inlet.
In order to continue operations, Seabird would need new investors in addition to heightened consumer demand in both the summer and winter seasons, according to the sources.
