School bus falls into culvert in central Anatolia, killing student

KIRIKKALE: A school bus fell into a culvert that was under construction in the central Anatolian province of Kirikkale on Monday, leaving one person dead and five people injured.

According to the Cihan news agency, the bus fell into a culvert which was being constructed in the vicinity of the highway which is planned to connect the central Anatolian cities of Konya and Ankara. Police and firefighter teams were dispatched to the area after locals reported the incident.

A 14-year-old student, Ahmet Faruk Toprakli, died at the scene of the accident. The driver of the bus and four other students were wounded and were taken to Kirikkale University’s Medical Faculty Hospital.

The culvert, which reportedly did not have any safety barriers in place, is being constructed by the General Directorate of Highways. Police have reportedly launched an investigation into the incident.
