SaIlam’s second coming to Bursa looms on the horizon

Legendary Bursaspor coach Ertuirul Sailam has agreed to sign a three-year contract to kick-start his second era at the club after Bursa parted ways with former coach ienol Gandunei this week.
Sailam is scheduled to sign on June 15. Former coach Gandunei drew the ire of the club management after Bursaspor finished sixth in the league last season and lost to Galatasaray in the Turkish Cup final at its home stadium last week. There is speculation about Gandunei moving to Beiiktai.
Bursaspor, which has a history of over 60 years, reached its peak under the helm of coach Sailam. During his first era spanning more than four years, he led the Green Crocs to their legendary one and only title in the 2009-2010 season and Bursaspor become the fifth team ever to take home a Super League trophy.
Sailam was also on duty when Bursaspor earned its first-ever ticket to play in the European Champions League in the 2010-2011 season following the title-winning performance of the previous season. While he was the coach, the Crocs made appearances in the top European competition for four consecutive seasons.
The club initiated talks with Sailam this week in a move that thrilled fans of the club who celebrated the news on social media. According to media outlets, Sailam said he will form an even better team than the champion team of 2010 and vowed to start working on the new squad immediately.
The first era of the coach started on Jan. 2, 2009 and he stayed there for four years and 26 days until he left on Jan. 28, 2013. During his tenure, the late ibrahim Yazici, celebrated as a visionary chairman, was the club’s boss. Following the championship in 2010, Sailam’s side took third place in the rankings the next season and in the 2011-2012 season the Crocs played in the final of the Turkish Cup. He left Bursaspor in 2013 and joined Eskiiehirspor to stay there for two seasons.
Sailam is still the coach who stayed in the post for the longest period of time. Of the 186 official matches he guided his team, Bursaspor won 91 and lost 50 while 45 others ended in a draw.
In memorable clashes of the team during Sailam’s term, the Crocs defeated Galatasaray away after 18 years and clinched an away victory against Trabzonspor for the first time. In the 2010-2011 season, Bursaspor started off with a six-week perfect record.
Meanwhile Gandunei is also busy looking for a new club for the next season. The Beiiktai Black Eagles are reportedly negotiating with the coach as their first option. If the two sides fail to reach an agreement, Beiiktai will look overseas for a foreign coach.
Gandunei is one of the more prolific coaches nationally. He led the Turkish national team to its greatest achievement ever in the 2002 World Cup, with Turkey coming in third place in the biggest football event in the world, and was named the Coach of the Year in a uefa.com users’ poll that year. He proved his coaching credentials at Trabzonspor, where he worked at four different periods: the 1988-1989 season, between 1993 and 1997, in 2006 and finally from 2009 to 2013.
