Rescue efforts continue to save trapped workers in mine in central Turkey

KARAMAN: Works by search and rescue teams to save 18 miners who were trapped in a coal mine after it collapsed following a flash flood in the Ermenek district of the southern Karaman province on Tuesday.

According to statement made by the Prime Ministry’s Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD), 55 vehicles with 353 personnel were dispatched to the scene to evacuate flood water in the mine.

There has been no contact with the trapped workers, who are estimated to be in water 50 meters deep.

AFAD President Fuat Oktay, Energy Minister Taner Yıldız, Transportation Minister Lutfi Elvan and Social Security Minister Faruk Celik arrived at the scene to follow the search and rescue efforts.

Karaman Governor Murat Koca said the workers were trapped in an adit after water flooded the mine. The incident occurred around noon, when morning shift workers were still inside the mine.
