Rauf Mirgadirov sentenced to pretrial detention

Baku: Hafiz Heydarov; Rauf Mirgadirov, the correspondent of “Ayna-Zerkalo” newspaper, has been sentenced to pretrial detention, chairman of the Anti-Torture Committee Elchin Behbudov told APA. According to him, Mirgadirov faced charges under the Criminal Code’s article #274 (treason).

According to information obtained by APA, Mirgadirov is accused of cooperating with Armenians. He reportedly traveled to Armenia and held several meetings without knowledge of the Azerbaijani state.

Human rights activist Behbudov said that the Azerbaijani President can only hold talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia: “You know that Armenia has occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan and the war between the two countries has not ended yet.”

Behbudov said he would meet with Mirgadirov in the coming days.

Rauf Mirgadirov was deported to Azerbaijan after being detained in Turkey on April 19.

Journalist Rauf Mirgadirov has been arrested in Baku over treason.
