RACHEL – Trabzon digs heels into sixth place with win over Karabuk

Trabzon digs heels into sixth place with win over KarabukTrabzonspor has been hanging out in sixth place for weeks on end and even if its situation did not improve with a last minute 3-2 win over Kardemir Karabukspor on Monday night, then at least it is not getting worse. Unfortunately for the Blue Flame, Karabukspor cannot say the same.

Every point drop is a potential lifeline for the Anatolian club. Karabuk is languishing in 17th place, which buys it a direct ticket to the lower leagues next season.

The survival instinct was evident in the week 22 match. Karabuk hit two quick replies to Mehmet Ekici’s 39th minute goal.

But when the final whistle blew and the club knew it had lost another match, Ahmet Ilhan collapsed to the ground in tears. Karabuk has not won a match since week 13.

“Our opponent committed fouls 31 times and we had 18. It was also a hard match for the referee.

Our opponent had extraordinary will and desire to win,” Trabzonspor coach Ersun Yanal said. “We shot and scored two goals.

Of course we are sad. We would be happy to see a return on our hard work,” Karabukspor coach YIlmaz Vural noted.

Abdou Traore scored in the 43rd minute and teammate Onur AyIk followed up two minutes later to give the Blue Flame a tenuous lead. Trabzonspor had no answer to that until late in the match.

Within the space of five minutes the Black Sea Storm put a goal away compliments of Paraguayan forward Oscar Cardozo and another from Ekici in the 89th minute. “It was truly a difficult match.

I congratulate my teammates. We believed in ourselves until the end, fought and deservingly won the match,” Ekici said.

“My teammates have a huge role in my goals. In my last goal, they opened up a space for me and closed the front of the goal.

I took aantage of the corner and scored,” he added. The goals all but dash Karabukspor’s chances of survival.

Time is ticking away for the endangered Black Sea club, but Vural is not worried. “If Karabukspor can put on such a show against an opponent like that then it will not stay at the bottom of the league,” he said.
