Public bus catches fire on Istanbul highway

ISTANBUL: A public bus suddenly caught fire near Istanbul’s Merter neighborhood on Wednesday while driving without passengers on the E-5 highway toward the direction of Bakırkoy district.

The driver of the bus noticed smoke from the fire and pulled the vehicle to the side of the highway. Other drivers who saw the fire reported the incident to the police and fire brigades. The bus driver used an extinguisher to control the fire before a fire truck arrived at the scene. A fire team extinguished the fire, which reportedly erupted from the bus’ engine.

While there were no deaths or injuries, the incident caused a brief traffic jam on the E-5 highway heading toward Bakırkoy. The driver, speaking to the media, said that he had stopped taking passengers in the morning because he realized the bus was leaking oil and he was driving it to a mechanic when it caught fire.
