President Ilham Aliyev: All freedoms secured in Azerbaijan

Baku: “We realize that we cannot succeed without modern governance and political transformation”

As a result of the fall of the Russian empire in the early twentieth century, the first ever democratic, independent republic in the Muslim East was created in Azerbaijan. Following a subsequent invasion, we lost our independence for 70 years. But we regained independence in 1991. That was a time Azerbaijan was facing internal tensions, economic hardship and Armenian invasion.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev made the remarks at the 48th annual meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Development Bank in Baku on May 4.

The head of state said Azerbaijan began political and economic reforms in the early years of independence.

“The political system was that of the Soviet system, and the economic system was planned economy. A transformation of political and economic system was vital. Since the mid 1990s, we have been a huge success in this area.

All freedoms are secured in Azerbaijan; freedom of peaceful gathering is guaranteed, 75 percent of the population are internet users. We provide broadband internet to the remotest spots of the country as well. We realize that we cannot succeed without modern governance and political transformation,” noted President Aliyev.
