OKAN UDO – Gutsy Bayburt defies odds to crush Kayserispor in cup

Gutsy Bayburt defies odds to crush Kayserispor in cupWonders will never cease, especially when the Ziraat Turkish Cup, a tournament of upsets, is at issue. And so it came to pass when Bayburt Grup zel Idare, a previously winless fourth division side, crushed previously unbeaten leader Kayserispor 3-0 at Bayburt Gen Osman Stadium on Wednesday.

Kayserispor, relegated from topflight only last season, went into Wednesdayand#39s match with seven points from two wins and a draw in three games. Bayburtand#39s story, however, made for sorry reading as the tiny Black Sea side had one point from one draw and two defeats.

Therefore, the general consensus before the match was that Kayserispor winning was almost a foregone conclusion. But there is no place for andldquoforegone conclusionsandrdquo in the Turkish Cup.

Gutsy minnow Bayburt proved this fact beyond any shadow of a doubt on Wednesday, Bahattin GuneIand#39s men scoring three goals within four minutes to hand Kayserispor its first defeat in the group. After an uneventful first half, in which neither team was able to score, Bayburt came out fighting and firing from all cylinders in the second.

And the Black Sea side was rewarded in the 60th minute when 34-year-old forward Volkan KabadayI broke the deadlock, lobbing the ball over Kayseri keeper Umut Kaya to put Bayburt 1-0.And the goals almost immediately began to flow with 24-year-old striker Gkhan zkan beating the Kayseri keeper one-on-one in the 62nd and 21-year-old center forward Gkhan zkan outwitting the Kayseri keeper one-on-one again two minutes later to seal the deal: Bayburt Grup zel Idare 3, Kayserispor 0The victory means Bayburt now has four points from four games, the same as Fenerbahe and AltInordu, whose match on Tuesday was called off due to persistent heavy rain.

Bayburt coach GuneI was visibly a happy man, though cautiously optimistic after the match. andldquoWe have the support of the Bayburt people they must have enjoyed the match, andrdquo he said.

andldquoWe are looking ahead to tomorrow and will work very hard as we continue our journey. As a matter of fact, the league is more important for us, but we also want to go as far as we can go in the cup, andrdquo he noted.

Kayserispor coach ErtuIrul Seme could not conceal his frustration after the shock and humiliation. andldquoI experimented on some players, but they failed to make good use of the opportunity.

Players who want to be offloaded have shown themselves and we will do that which is necessary during the [winter] break, andrdquo he said. There were other upsets on Wednesday as third-division Cizrespor shut out visiting Super League side Torku Konyaspor 2-0 fourth division Tuzlaspor beat Super Leagueand#39s Gaziantepspor 2-1 at home and third division Ankara side Keirengucu stunned another topflight team Akhisar Belediyespor 2-1 away.

Elsewhere, coach Sergen YalIn won his first match as Sivasspor coach after his team overcame Gaziantep BB 2-1 on the road. And there was no victor or vanquished in the Bursaspor-Samsunspor clash that ended 1-1.
