Muslims flock to Selimiye Mosque on Lailat al-Miraj

EDIRNE: Large numbers of Muslim people went to historical Selimiye Mosque to mark Muslim festival of Lailat al-Miraj, known as Mirac Kandili in Turkish, which is the sacred day of the Prophet Muhammad’s ascent to Heaven, on Friday.

Lailat al-Miraj celebrates the Prophet Muhammad’s Isra and Miraj. Isra is the name for his night journey from Mecca to Jerusalem, and Miraj is the term for his ascension to heaven.

Following evening prayer, people went to the mosque, read Quran and prayed. Since the mosque was full of people, another crowd prayed and worshipped outside the mosque.
