Leftist groups clash with police in Istanbul

ISTANBUL: After an anti-terror operation that was conducted at the morning hours on Tuesday in Istanbul’s Gazi neighborhood, some members of far-leftist groups were engaged in clashes with security forces, attacking them with stones, fireworks and Molotov cocktails.

After counterterrorism teams of Istanbul police department carried out a large scale operation in the neighborhood in Sultangazi district and dozens were detained, several members of far-leftist groups attacked security forces in the area until the noon hours. Riot police teams that were dispatched to the area to back the operation, dispersed attacking groups with tear gas and water cannons.

The tension is still high in the neighborhood. Police teams are waiting at the area.
