Lawyers for Ermenek mine disaster victims seek arrest of company’s manager

The lawyers representing relatives of 18 coal miners killed on Oct. 28, 2014 in a major accident in the town of Ermenek have been seeking the arrest of Has iekerler Mining Company Business Manager Yavuz andOzsoy, who was released pending trial.
The trial is being held at the Ermenek High Criminal Court in the Central Anatolian province of Karaman.
Speaking to reporters following the trialand’s third hearing on Wednesday, lawyer Anil Akkui noted that andOzsoy had previously said, andquotNumber one is Saffer Uyar [the owner of Has iekerler Mining Company] and the second man is me. A nail cannot be even pounded here [in the company] without my knowledge, and” arguing that andOzsoy thus should be tried under arrest, not released pending trial.
Uyar and Ermenek Cenne Lintyit Coal Company owner Abdullah andOzbey were arrested, along with three others, in November of last year on charges of causing deaths due to negligence.
Akkui claimed that andOzsoy is responsible for the lack of inspections in the mine where the accident took place.
The Ermenek mining accident left 18 people trapped underground after the mine was flooded with water that failed to drain from one of the shafts. On Nov. 8, 2014, police detained seven people on suspicion of negligence. Engineers, the owner of the mining company and two senior officials at the mine were among the suspects.
The Ermenek Chief Public Prosecutorand’s Office is seeking prison terms of between 20 to 25 years for the suspects on charges of committing multiple murders by conscious negligence.
Claims of negligence have been leveled, as some say water inside the mine had not been drained on time, causing the flooding. According to regulations, the water should have been drained every other week.
