Kazakhstan tightens surveillance in Caspian Sea after Azerbaijani oil platform fire

Baku: Kazakhstan has tightened security in the Caspian Sea after the fire on Azerbaijan’s offshore oil platform which broke out on Dec.4, said the Kazakh State Border Guard Service.

“Despite of the continuation of difficult weather conditions in the region, the Coast Guard head ordered boats and ships to strengthen surveillance in the area of responsibility and to report and provide necessary aid in case any objects or victims are detected,” said the statement.

As a result of a windstorm on Dec.4 at 17:40 (UTC/GMT + 4 hours), a high-pressure underwater gas pipeline was damaged which caused a fire on the platform #10 at SOCAR’s Gunashli field.

Two died as a result of the accident. Currently, 29 people are listed as missing.
