Istanbul courthouse evacuated as hostage crisis continues

ISTANBUL: Officials evacuated Caglayan courthouse following order from the Istanbul Governor’s Office as prosecutor Mehmet Kiraz in case of a young Gezi victim, is still being held hostage.

Police officers are waiting in front of the gates and do not let in people.

Large numbers of offices from special operations teams, special team, crime scene investigation teams arrived at points surrounding the courthouse. Press members were allowed to follow developments outside of the entrance of courthouse yard.

The outlawed leftist group that took the prosecutor hostage, the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front (DHKP/C), announced the hostage taking in a statement published on a website called Halkin Sesi.

Istanbul Governor Vasip Sahin, Police Director Selami Altinok and Mustafa Caliskan, the deputy police director in charge of counter-terrorism, were at the scene of the incident as well.
