IHSAN – Failure of ErdoIan’s Goebbelsian propaganda machine in 2014

Failure of ErdoIan’s Goebbelsian propaganda machine in 2014 Fatih University and the Istanbul Institute, between Nov. 1 and Dec.

28, conducted a survey among figures in the Western worldand#39s power elite, in the form of online interviews of 176 people that included politicians, businessmen, academics, researchers, journalists, civil society representatives and decision-makers in the US, Germany, the UK and France. The study revealed that the image of both the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and President Recep Tayyip ErdoIan in the eyes of most of the Western power elite has sunk into very low in terms of prestige, credibility and democracy.

Most of those surveyed now see Turkey and its leaders as authoritarian. As I have repeatedly argued here before, it also makes it clear that ErdoIan has gradually become a liability and a burden for the AK Party.

Those among the power elite that were surveyed have a relatively positive perception of the AK Party compared to their perception of ErdoIan. As Todayand#39s Zaman reported yesterday, 54 percent of the respondents who took the survey said they find the ideology of the AK Party to be authoritarian, while 23 percent said it is conservative and 16 percent said it is Islamist.

Only 3 percent of the respondents described the party as liberal democrat. Very few people in the West still think that the AK Party leaders have truly jettisoned Islamism and have transformed their ideology into post-Islamism or even democratic liberalismIn the survey, an overwhelming majority of respondents, 77 percent, see ErdoIan as an authoritarian leader, 10 percent called him Islamist and 8 percent called him conservative.

Only 3 percent of the respondents said they think ErdoIan is a liberal democrat leader This suggests that some of them are still hopeful of the AK Party and expect that it can get rid of ErdoIan, stop itself becoming fully authoritarian and Kemalo-Islamist and go back to the golden age of the AK Party, ie, 2002-2008.I must say I am not as hopeful as they are, since I strongly believe the AK Party has become a corrupt party almost totally and the overwhelming majority of its members knowingly benefit from ErdoIanand#39s illegitimate and unlawful crony-capitalism In most cases, the voices of dissent coming from within the party are not because of disagreement over universal values, democracy, human rights, economic efficiency etc.

but on how to share the loot. In their off the record conversations, many AK Party members and pro-AK Party figures openly talk about these problems.

Their only excuse is their claim that they are trying to serve Islam by becoming rich, powerful and strong so that they can face the infidels! I am not sure if they sincerely believe this perverted rhetoric. The Western decision-makers were also asked if they think the AK Party government espouses European values such as the supremacy of law, democracy, human rights, pluralism and freedom Not surprisingly, 84 percent of the respondents indicated that they do not think the AK Party government is in line with or follows fundamental European values.

They also observe that the AK Party government is moving away from its Western allies and their democratic and pro-freedom values. The respondents of the survey were asked if the implementation of the principle of the separation of powers in Turkey is similar to its implementation in aanced democracies and 81 percent of them responded in the negative.

A total of 78 percent of the respondents do not believe that there is an independent, transparent and fair justice system in Turkey as is the case in aanced democracies. The area in which the Western power elite has the worst perception of Turkey is related to freedom of the press in the country.

A whopping 87 percent of them stated that they do not think there is freedom of the press in Turkey. Most of the interviews were done before the Dec.

14 government attacks on Zaman and STV, thus, as of today, we can guess that this 87 per cent is probably higherAll in all, despite its heroic and inhuman efforts throughout 2014, ErdoIanand#39s andldquooebbelsianandrdquo propaganda machine which includes many media outlets has not been able to brainwash the Western power elite, since they look at his actions and not merely his words.
