How Turkey looks from the US

How Turkey looks from the USI am on my way to Washington, where I will speak at a panel discussion on post-election Turkey organized by SETAWashington. Ahead of every general election, there is a lot of talk about the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in Washington, and attention is paid to the party. After the elections, the attention dissipates, and the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) is at the heart of the focus again. This is what’s happening this time. All eyes are on Prime Minister Recep Tayyip ErdoIan and his AK Party. People are discussing what decisions he might make regarding domestic and international politics. His recent “Armenian initiative” has been well received. If he contributes to normalizing ties with Israel and a solution in Cyprus, he will obtain an aantage in relations with the West. But the real question is the future of democracy in Turkey, and “what type of democracy” it will be. Concerns about that aspect remain in place, and rightfully so. (FUAT KEYMAN, RADIKA
