Hikmet Hajiyev: ‘Trial’ of Dilgam Asgarov and Shahbaz Guliyev has no legal basis

Baku: “Contacts with the OSCE Minsk Group and international organizations to have them released will be continued”

“Armenian media has released reports of the end of the illegal trial of Dilgam Asgarov and Shahbaz Guliyev. This so-called court process conducted in Azerbaijan’s occupied territories has no legal basis, and the result claimed cannot have any legal weight”.

Hikmet Hajiyev, spokesperson for the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, stated this while commenting on the illegal trial of Dilgam Asgarov and Shahbaz Guliyev in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“Dilgam Asgarov and Shahbaz Guliyev were taken hostage by the Armenian Armed Forces while going to visit the graves of their parents in the territory of Azerbaijan, and Hasan Hasanov was killed mercilessly. Armenia is responsible for grossly violating the European Convention on Human Rights, international humanitarian law, the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, and for taking civilians hostage, interrogating them through torture and forcing them to face illegal trial. To remind human rights to be an international value, some international institutions and authorities must demand the Republic of Armenia, a country that does not approach the issue of human rights on a selective basis and violate them in a flagrant, systematic, massive way, immediately releases Dilgam Asgarov and Shahbaz Guliyev and renders an account about the fates of more than 4,000 Azerbaijanis,” he said.

H. Hajiyev also remarked that the international community must pay necessary attention to the protection of the rights of over one million Azerbaijani refugees and IDPs, who have been deprived of the most principal rights as a result of Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan, adding that contacts with the OSCE Minsk Group and international organizations to have them released will be continued.
