”He will pay a heavy price for it; I won’t let him go unpunished” Erdogan vows

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has personally threatened the editor of a newspaper which published video footage it said showed the National Intelligence Organization (MİT) helping send weapons to Syria.

In a reaction to Cumhuriyet newspaper’s report cracking the fact open that there were weapons and ammunition in MİT trucks which were stopped by prosecutor and security forces in January 19, 2014, President Erdogan threatened the newspaper and its Editor in Chief with paying a heavy price. “The person who prepared this news report will pay a heavy price for it; I won’t let him go unpunished,” Erdogan implied.

“Of course this certainly concerns the Turkmens in the Bayır-Bucak area of Syria. Of course the claims which mentioned in this report are not true. I have always said this: Our MİT is currently giving the Turkmens this support, particularly in the context of humanitarian relief. That slander targeting MİT is an act of espionage and a newspaper has recently gotten involved in it. I have brought a lawsuit [against journalist Can Dündar]. They solely aim to tarnish Turkey’s image. And the person who prepared an exclusive report on it will pay a heavy price for it; I won’t let him go unpunished.” Erdogan added.

SOUNDBITE: TURKISH PRESIDENT RECEP TAYYIP ERDOGAN, ISTANBUL, 31 MAY 2015 “Of course this certainly concerns the Turkmens in the Bayır-Bucak area of Syria. For example there are some numbers about the cargo of trucks. Where did you get those figures? From the ‘parallel structure.’ I have instructed my lawyers to launch legal action. They are trying to create a specific perception on behalf of someone else.

The mastermind instructed them to do so. They talked about the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant [ISIL]; they hinted at terrorist organizations. They even claim we are not providing any support to the Turkmens in Bayır-Bucak. Mr. Ahmet Davutoglu held numerous meetings and so did I. Here, a person who is frank, I mean leader team of Turkmens, must declare the training we have provided them. They should make public our logistical assistance and the training we have provided. We have not left them alone, but we have transferred some of them to our country and back to their homeland to save them from certain problems. Only some of our political rivals knew about it. We cannot simply sit and watch how the tyrannical Assad oppresses them at will. We will continue to give them all the support we can muster. I have brought a lawsuit [against journalist Can Dündar]. They solely aim to tarnish Turkey’s image. And the person who prepared an exclusive report on it will pay a heavy price for it; I won’t let him go unpunished.”
