Gul attends event of group labeled ‘traitors’ by ErdoIan

ISTANBUL (CIHAN)- President Abdullah Gul is scheduled to attend a meeting of the Turkish Industrialists and Businessmen’s Association (TuSIAD), which Prime Minister Recep Tayyip ErdoIan accused of treachery following the business group’s issuance of a strong warning to the government in January.

TuSIAD’s High Consultation Council Meeting is scheduled to take place in Ankara on Thursday. Expected guests include KONDA Research and Consultancy head Tarhan Erdem and Refet Gurkaynak, an economist from Bilkent University who has also worked as a research fellow with the US Federal Reserve.

In the strongest warning yet from a business group to the government, TuSIAD President Muharrem YIlmaz said in January that foreign direct investment (FDI) would not be made in a country with no respect for the rule of law, where legal codes conflict with European Union rules, where public procurement laws have been amended dozens of times and where companies are pressured through tax fines.

Speaking at a party rally in Ankara in late January, ErdoIan lashed out at the TuSIAD head for what he called a negative portrayal of the Turkish economy. “Saying that foreign direct investment will not be made in Turkey is treachery,” ErdoIan said, targeting the business group and its president.
