Galatasaray clinches 20th league title, becomes first team to get fourth star

ISTANBUL: Turkey’s Galatasaray became Spor Toto Super League champion for a record 20th time on Monday after archrival Fenerbahce could only draw 2-2 at Basaksehir, earning its fourth star over its logo.

The team had put its hands on the league trophy after beating Besiktas 2-0 in a derby on Sunday night and waited Fenerbahce to drop points against Basaksehir. A 2-2 draw on Monday’s match brought Galatasaray the league title one week ahead the end of the season. Galatasaray now has 76 points and Fenerbahce has 71 points. Galatasaray has an unassailable five-point lead over Fenerbahce with one game to play.

It is the third time in four seasons the Istanbul club have won the title.

Both Galatasaray and Fenerbahce had won 19 titles prior to this season and a 20th would allow the successful team to add a fourth star to their team shirts – one star is allotted for every five championships. Earning its 20th championship, Galatasaray became the first team to get the fourth star on its jersey.

In the match that paved the way for Galatasaray’s championship, Fenerbahce had four players sent off. Fenerbahce’s dismissals included Cameroonian Pierre Webo who was ordered off after a shocking incident in which he kicked an opponent in the head.

Basaksehir’s Alexandu Epureanu challenged to head the ball but Webo lunged at him with his leg raised and caught him in the side of the head with his studs.

Fenerbahce also had Mehmet Topuz dismissed in the 84th while in the last minute Bruno Alves was sent off for a foul and Caner Erkin for dissent as they lost control.

Amid all the chaos, Diego and Webo scored in the last 10 minutes for Fenerbahce as they came back from 2-0 behind while Basaksehir’s Mehmet Batdal, who had scored twice early in the second half, missed a last-minute penalty.
