Funeral ceremony held for prominent novelist Yasar Kemal

ISTANBUL: Thousands of people, including well-known names from political, art, business and sports environments gathered at Istanbul’s Tesvikiye mosque to pay final farewell to internationally acclaimed Turkish author Yasar Kemal (92). The author has passed away on Saturday at the hospital where he had been in an intensive care unit due to cardiac arrhythmia and shortness of breath for more than a month.

After the funeral prayers at the mosque, the coffin of deceased novelist were taken to the Lutfi Kirdar Congress and Exhibition Palace for a farewell ceremony. Along with politicians such as former President Abdullah Gul, Main Opposition Leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu, Pro-Kurdish HDP Leader Selahettin Demirtas, artists and businesspeople, thousands of Yasar Kemal readers also were ready at the palace to say goodbye to their favorite writer.

Kemal’s friends, family members and colleagues shared their memories with attendees during the ceremony. Almost all speakers mentioned the importance and the value of great author for Turkish modern literature. Some artists staged brief pieces from Kemal’s novels.
