Former BDDK head Mukim Oztekin passes away at 50

The former head of Turkey’s banking watchdog, Mukim Oztekin, who quit his post due to health problems late last year, passed away at the age of 50 on Saturday. Oztekin had brain surgery in November of last year after he was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. Oztekin, who was born in the province of Erzurum in 1965, was assigned to the position of head of the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK) on June 22, 2012. Following his graduation from Ankara University’s political sciences faculty in 1987 Oztekin worked for Garanti Bankasi, Albaraka Turk, and Asya Finance Kurumu — the former name of Bank Asya — as inspector, deputy inspector, branch manager and unit manager between 1988 and 2000. Between 2000 and 2004 Oztekin worked as the vice general manager of Bank Asya and held the post of president of the BDDK between July 2012 and November 2014. Oztekin also held administrative level positions at Ziraat Bankasi and the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF). A funeral ceremony will be held for Oztekin in Istanbul on Sunday following noon prayers at Karacaahmet iakirin Mosque.
