HATAY: Fire breaks out in forest in southern Turkey, damages 1 hectare area

The Iskenderun district of Turkey’s southern province of Hatay saw a fire break out late on Wednesday, leading to households being evacuated and damaging pine trees on an area of one hectare.

According to the Cihan news agency, the cause of the fire was a spark from a utility pole in the Denizciler neighborhood high on the Amanos mountains at around 2 a.m. Locals from the neighborhood were evacuated from their homes as a precaution, and the fire quickly spread due to stormy weather.

Fire trucks from both the Hatay Metropolitican Municipality and the Iskenderun fire department intervened in the fire. A water cannon vehicle used in civil disturbances by the riot police also joined in the efforts. It took three hours for the teams to put the fire under control.
