Fener cruises to comfortable win over Malaga, Efes beaten

Fenerbahce alker took its winning streak to greater heights, with the Istanbul club reaching a comfortable 78-63 win over visiting Spanish leaders Unicaja Malaga in front of its home crowd in their Euroleague Top 16 clash on Thursday. Another Turkish league outfit, Anadolu Efes, was narrowly the better side in most parts of the game but faltered when it mattered most and lost to Olympiacos 86-75 on Thursday.

Fenerbahccedile Uumllker took its winning streak to greater heights, with the Istanbul club reaching a comfortable 78-63 win over visiting Spanish leaders Unicaja Malaga in front of its home crowd in their Euroleague Top 16 clash on Thursday.

Another Turkish league outfit, Anadolu Efes, was narrowly the better side in most parts of the game but faltered when it mattered most and lost to Olympiacos 86-75 on Thursday.

At the Uumllker Sports Arena, Andrew Goudelock paced the winners with 22 points. Nemanja Bjelica netted 15 and Bogdan Bogdanovic chipped in 11 points, while Ryan Toolson scored 14 in defeat.

Fenerbahccedile maintained its grip on Group F lead with the victory.

Fenerbahccedile coach Zeljko Obradovic said Malaga put up a good fight even though they did not have any hopes for the quarterfinals.

He praised the performance of his team starting from the second quarter and congratulated the players and the fans. Obradovic was upset over the condition of Ricky Hickman, who could not finish the game due to an injury in the third quarter, and said the injury seems serious.

Malaga had a storming start to the game and did not let Fenerbahccedile score a single point in the first four minutes to take a 9-2 lead midway through the first quarter Goudelock and Erden fired up the hosts to get the upper hand for the first time, 11-10, but could not stop the visitors from having a 21-19 edge in the first period.

Fenerbahccedile responded with a Goudelock three-pointer and a layup plus free throw by Hickman to reclaim the lead: 27-23. Bogdanovic hit a stunning half-time buzzer beater near his own arc to give the hosts a 39-33 lead at half-time.

Fenerbahccedile started the third quarter with a good defense and a 6-0 run. A Bogdanovic triple and a Goudelock layup extended the margin 54-39, before earning a 63-45 advantage going into the last 10 minutes.

OIuz SavaI opened the scoring for the hosts in the final period and reached his 1,000-point mark in Euroleague.

Stefan Markovic sank a three-pointer and Carlos Suarez’s free throws brought Malaga within 66-52 halfway through the quarter A Goudelock two-pointer wrapped up the game 78-63 in favor of the hosts.

Also in Group F on Thursday, EA7 Milan beat Laboral Viktoria 99-85. In Group E it was: ALBA Berlin 73, Crvena Zvezda Telekom Belgrade 65 and Zalgiris Kaunas 72, FC Barcelona 83.

In Athens, it was a close competition in the first three periods of Olympiacos-Efes game, with the hosts taking a 17-16 edge in the first quarter, a 35-35 tie at half-time and Efes leading 57-53 in the third quarter

Olympiacos scored 33 points as opposed to 18 points by Efes and eventually finished the game 86-75. Former Olympiacos forward Stratos Perperoglou’s 23 points were not enough for an Efes victory.

Lafayette Oliver led the scoring of the winners with 17 points.

Efes remains fourth in Group F with a 5-7 record but needs to be careful in the remaining two games of Top 16.

Coach Dusan Ivkovic in his post-game remarks said they need to play better and win the remainder of the games.
