Families flock to graveyard on anniversary of Soma disaster

MANISA: On the first anniversary of mine disaster which left 301 workers dead in Turkish western town of Soma, families went to martyrdom on Wednesday morning.

Mourning families read Quran and prayed for their beloved ones. Speaking to Cihan news agency, Ismail Colak, father of slain worker Ugur Colak, said it has been a years since the disaster but they still mourn as they did on the first day. He called on the government saying that they want justice to be served for people responsible for the disaster. “We demanded nothing but justice from the government,” added Colak.

Father of Ibrahim Duman stated that they applied to the court but his slain son was found guilty and they cannot do anything for their son.

On May 13, 2014, Turkey was shocked by news of an explosion and fire at a coal mine in Soma, a town in the western province of Manisa. The fire rapidly depleted the oxygen in the mineshaft, causing 301 trapped mineworkers to die of carbon monoxide poisoning. A total of 162 others were injured in the blast.
