ErdoIan preparing ‘massive’ post-election crackdown on critical media, says whistleblower

A popular Twitter whistleblower account tweeted on Tuesday that the crackdown on the ipek Media Group was directly orchestrated by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is also in the process of orchestrating a massive crackdown — planned for directly after Sundayand’s parliamentary election — on the remaining media outlets that remain critical and independent of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government and Erdogan.
and”Yezid [implying Erdogan] is in the process of materializing his long-planned coup on media outlets. He is creating a state within the state. The raid on the ipek Media Group will continue. SandOzcandu, Cumhuriyet and Dogan Media are the next targets, and” said a government whistleblower who tweets under the pseudonym Fuat Avni, and who has a long and credible track record of predicting political developments, in subsequent tweets late on Tuesday.
Fuat Avni refers to Erdogan as Yezid, which is a reference to the Umayyad caliph, who according to Islamic belief allowed his opponent Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, to die of thirst in the Battle of Karbala.
The whistleblowerand’s tweets continued: and”He [Erdogan] has created alternative institutions within the judicial system and security forces, and he will use them to crack down on the [free] media outlets. The government and ministries have been suspended. All the orders are directly given by him and his gang [aisors].and”
The corporate headquarters of Koza ipek Holding, which owns five critical media outlets, were raided on Tuesday by riot police who used pepper spray and tear gas as they entered the building to serve the holding with what opposition voices have said is an unlawful decision to take over the company management in order to silence that part of the free media only days before Sundayand’s general election.
Following the crackdown on the ipek Media Group, many in Turkey are now concerned that the crackdown on critical and independent media have reached such a point that takeovers will soon engulf other media groups including the Feza and Dogan media groups and the Zaman, Taraf, Cumhuriyet and SandOzcandu dailies.
Cumhuriyet daily Editor-in-Chief Can Dandundar and a group of journalists from the daily visited ipek Media Group headquarters on Tuesday to show solidarity against the governmentand’s latest move to seize the group.
and”Turkey [is being] ruled as a dictatorship. There is pressure in every area but we feel [this pressure] mostly on the media. The operation that has taken place today is an important stage of this [pressure]. [This is] a step of a government that has become so reckless as to seize a media group and assign a pro-government figure at the top of it,and” Dandundar said during his visit to ipek Media Group headquarters.
