EP rapporteur Piri meets ruling and opposition party representatives

ANKARA: Ahead of preparing development report about Turkey, European Parliament’s (EP) Rapporteur Kati Piri convened with the representatives of Turkish political parties, including ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and opposition parties which have group in the Parliament, such as main opposition party of Republican People’s Party (CHP) and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), on Wednesday in Ankara.

Starting her meetings traffic with main opposition party of CHP in the morning, Piri’s next destination was AK Party group in the Parliament. Representing the ruling party, AK Party’s Group Deputy Chairman Mahir Unal met with Piri and accompanying delegation. At the meeting, Unal stated that his party has always been aware of the importance of adaptation process to EU.

In her turn, Piri underscored the importance of democratic reforms in EU membership process and expressed her hope on behalf of EP that Turkish government will attach the necessary attention to such kind of reforms.

“I fully understand that political parties are there to represent different political views, different ideologies. But we very much hope from the EP side, when it comes to the democratic reforms, which are also needed for EU accession, there can be good cooperation in your parliament,” Piri added.

Later on, Piri came together with MHP’s AK Party’s Group Deputy Chairman Oktay Vural. She will finalize her meetings at the Turkish parliament after the meeting with pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democracy Party (HDP) representatives late hours on Wednesday.
