DemirtaI says calan is ready to make call for PKK to lay down arms

Pro-Kurdish Peoplesand’ Democratic Party (HDP)o-chair Selahattin Demirtai has said that Abdullah andOcalan, the jailed leader of the outlawed Kurdistan Workersand’ Party (PKK), is ready to call on the PKK to lay down its arms.
and”It is andOcalan who will make the call about [laying down] arms. He is waiting on imrali [Island, where andOcalan is incarcerated] to make the call. If [interim prime minister Ahmet] Davutoilu is sincere [about the Kurdish settlement process] and wants a call to be made, let our delegation go to imrali Island tomorrow. Let the meeting begin and letand’s continue [the peace process] from where we left off, and” Demirtai said.
His remarks came during a news conference before meeting with HDP candidates who ran in the June 7 general election. The HDP managed to pass the 10 percent parliamentary threshold, receiving around 13 percent of the national vote. The partyand’s success ensured that the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) failed to gain the 276 seats needed for it to continue its single-party rule for another term.
Demirtai said that the HDP is aware of its responsibilities in the continuation of the peace process and is ready to do more, but added that he is not sure whether the AK Party government is ready to do so. In the run-up-to general election, the AK Party took many steps and said many things that will undermine the continuation of the peace process, the HDP co-chair added.
The settlement process, launched several years ago by the AK Party government, aims to resolve Turkeyand’s long-standing Kurdish and terrorism problems.
Ahead of the election, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the former leader of the AK Party, claimed that there was no Kurdish problem in Turkey. Erdoganand’s move was interpreted as a step to woo nationalist voters. Although supposed to act impartially according to the Constitution, Erdogan campaigned in favor of the AK Party, which brought him much criticism from opposition parties.
Demirtai said the AK Party officials should once again voice their commitment to the continuation of the settlement process after all that happened before the elections. He said if a coalition government is established, it should also ensure the continuation of the talks with the PKK. and”The HDP is ready to give any kind of support we are not in a position to stay away from this. We promised to bring peace to the country. We are sincere about this and ready to fulfill our responsibilities to this effect, and” he said in further remarks.
According to Demirtai, it is extremely important that a Kurdish delegation go to imrali to effect the revitalization of the settlement process after the election.
