Communist Party protests blocking Taksim Square on Labor Day

ISTANBUL: A large group of people from Communist Party (KP) held a protest in Istanbul’s Mecidiyeköy district against decision of Istanbul Governor’s Office which prohibited use of Taksim Square on Labor Day.

In a written statement released by the Istanbul Governor’s Office on Wednesday, Taksim Square “was not deemed suitable for May 1 celebrations.” Istanbul Governor Vasip Sahin also announced on April 14 that the use of Taksim Square would once again be prohibited for the traditional May 1 celebrations, with extreme security measures in place for weeks preceding the holiday.
