Commemorations on Canakkale victory overshadowed by media ban

CANAKKALE: A series of commemorations to mark the 100 th anniversary of victory in the Battle of Canakkale (Gallipoli) were tainted when authorities denied admission of some press members including reporters from Cihan news agency in the northwestern province of Canakkale Wednesday.

The Prime Ministry’s Directorate General of Press and Information (BYEGM) did not let the reporters to cover wreath laying ceremony in front of monument of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

The ceremony which began at 8: 30 a.m. was attended by National Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz, Canakkale Governor Ahmet Cinar, Canakkale Strait and Garrison Commander Rear Admiral Aydin Sirin and Canakkale Mayor Ulgur Gokhan.
