Commemoration ceremony held for slain Gezi protester

HATAY (CIHAN)- A commemoration ceremony was held on Thursday for Ali Ismail Korkmaz, who was killed during last year’s Gezi Park protests, upon his grave in the southern province of Hatay.

A mausoleum was built by for Korkmaz by the Chamber of Turkish Engineers and Architects’ (TMMOB) on the first anniversary of his death. The ceremony was attended by hundreds of people including family members of other protesters, who were killed during the protests. Family of Korkmaz thanked TMMOB and people attending at the ceremony.

Korkmaz, a 19-year-old university student, suffered a brain hemorrhage after being beaten with baseball bats by men in street clothes as he fled police during a demonstration in EskiIehir in support of the Gezi Park protests.

He fought for his life for 38 days at a hospital before passing away. The attack on Korkmaz stoked the tensions that erupted late in May over a government plan to demolish Istanbul’s Gezi Park in Taksim Square and replace it with a replica of an Ottoman-era barracks.
