Chief Judge slams gov’t for attempts to undermine top court

ANKARA (CIHAN)- Speaking at a Chief Judge slams gov’t for attempts to undermine top court ceremony marking the anniversary of the opening of the Constitutional Court in Ankara, Chief Judge HaIim KIlIç lambasted Prime Minister Recep Tayyip ErdoIan’s government and politicians for attempts to undermine the top court, which has partially annulled recent legislation restructuring the Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK), citing the erosion of separation of powers in giving the executive firm control over the judiciary.

KIlIç’s harsh remarks came as a row between the judiciary and the government deepens over the latter’s policies aimed at subordinating the judiciary. President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister ErdoIan were present among the audience during KIlIç’s critical speech.

Firmly rejecting accusations of politicization of the top court, the chief judge said the Constitutional Court will not bow to any orders and will not take instructions from anybody in a strong remark most believe was directed at ErdoIan.
